CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS
The Criminal Investigations Division consists of three major components and is managed by Captain Craig Dodd:
AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System)
The AFIS Section collects, preserves, identifies and compares latent fingerprints from crime scenes and from physical evidence submitted for examination by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Latent prints are among the most valuable and common types of physical evidence. All objects at the scene of a crime are considered possible sources of fingerprint evidence, which may lead to the identification of the offender. The AFIS Section provides six types of primary services:
- Comparison of latent prints to known inked suspect prints.
- Identification of unknown deceased persons.
- Recording of inked and digital fingerprint images of persons for forensic comparison purposes.
- Usage of the State of Georgia AFIS system and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) for forensic investigation purposes.
- Preservation and examination of physical evidence for the presence of forensic latent evidence.
- Capture and enhancement of specific digital images relating to physical evidence.
